In this week's MSC Breakdown, we take a look at a concept that has revolutionized the game at the highest level, both on and off the pitch, over the past 20 years. 'Tactical Periodization' is a soccer training methodology that was developed around 35 years ago by Vítor Frade, a sports science professor from Porto University in Portugal. Believe it or not, there was a time when coaches around the world would compartmentalize the physical from the technical work. Then, as more science, psychology, and tactical models were introduced to elite environments, managing and maximizing every component became a challenge... and that is where 'Tactical Periodization' came in. Jose Mourinho is probably the most well-known proponent of 'Tactical Periodization, this training methodology has also been adopted successfully, by André Villas-Boas, Brendan Rogers, Nuno Espírito Santo, Marco Silva, Carlos Carvalhal, Vitor Pereira, to name just a few.
Over the last couple of years, we have been fortunate to have been joined by coaches who have studied 'Tactical Periodization' at a very high level and undertaken the courses taught by Vítor Frade himself. In this week's breakdown we take a look at some insights from those guests and what potential lessons we can take and implement with our own teams. You can watch the breakdown below.
ADDITIONAL RESOURCES:
If you would like to watch the full webinar with Portimonense SC coach, Manuel Fonseca, you can watch it below. Manuel discusses the famous tactical methodology developed by Vitor Frade and gives a unique insight into the implementation of the methodology and how a coach at both professional and youth level can take ideas and principles into their personal work.
We also did an interview with Player and Coach Developer at Sarpsborg 08 and UEFA PRO Licensed coach, Frederico Morais, to discuss ways that coaches can implement a tactical methodology at their clubs, as well as sharing his perspectives in the game. He has worked at the professional level in Italy, France, Portugal, England, and now Norwary, but is also a passionate student of the game. You can watch the full interview below.
In the MSC Breakdown, we also featured an interview with current Houston Dynamo (MLS) assistant coach, Adin Osmanbasic. Adin did an outstanding presentation to our audience in 2020 around the topic of 'Pressing', using his periodization model at Atlanta United academy as an example.
