On Thursday we were joined by AFC Wimbledon’s Academy Manager Michael Hamilton to discuss ways that youth coaches can build a program centered around individual player development. AFC Wimbledon are a club with a great reputation on player development and have continued to innovate and overachieve in terms of resources that they have available. In his presentation, Michael discusses how coaches can change their environment and behaviors in oder to facilitate ownership and responsibility. Often words like 'player centered' and 'development' are used by coaches, but underneath the good intentions, their program runs like it always has. I really enjoyed and appreciated how Michael showed examples of how they tweak their every day processes to prioritize the individual development aspect ahead of results, and sometimes even the science. I think this is a great example for coaches to realize that we can be doing more to impact young players in the areas where we complain that the current generation of players are falling short.
