Fast One-Touch Passing Drills!

Starting a training session with an element of energy and tempo is typically a priority for a coach. However, choosing specific exercises that introduce players to the topic, challenge their ability on the ball, and engage them in the process can sometimes be a challenge. This week on the MSC Breakdown, we look at three one-touch passing exercises that coaches can use to spark that tempo and speed on the ball.

Below is a YouTube breakdown detailing three exercises. If you enjoy this content, please subscribe to our MSC YouTube page.

Below is the breakdown of all the exercises shown in the video.

Exercise One: Set and Diagonal Pass

  • 8 players are organized in a diamond with two players on each cone

  • Diamond is set-up with cones 15 yards apart

  • Ball moves around the diamond with the pass into the highest player, who lays off the ball first time to their partner

  • Both players on each cone combine for the next pass and then switch places

  • Play for 90 seconds before changing direction. Three sets total.

Exercise Two: Midfield Combination

  • 6 players are organized into a pentagon shape with cones 10-yards apart

  • Two players start on the ball

  • Ball moves in a specific pattern (see above) with players playing on one touch and then following their pass after playing it

  • Encourage players to move off their cone as the pass is arriving

  • Play for 2 minutes before changing direction. Three sets total.

Exercise 3: Team Give and Go Warm-Up

  • 10 players are organized into the above shape with cones 15-yards apart

  • Two players start on the ball

  • Ball moves in one direction with players playing on one touch and combining with the next player as the ball moves around the grid

  • Players are constantly moving and follow their pass

  • Encourage players to move off their cone as the pass is arriving

  • Play for 2 minutes before changing direction. Three sets total.
