Jose Mourinho Fenerbahçe Pre-Season Session

Pre-season session design is an area of the game that is very much open to interpretation and coach can approach it in a number of different ways. Some coaches opt for a physical introductory session while others may gradually introduce tactical principles from the early stages. As Jose Mourinho arrives at Fenerbahçe, many around the world are interested to see how the new coach will construct his team on the training ground. How do you introduce key principles? Where does the physical planning come into it? Of course, without access to the insight of Jose Mourinho and his staff in the planning process, this MSC breakdown is just an educated guess on why potential exercises are set-up - but as always with the best coaches in the world, you always learn something. In this breakdown we take a look at how Jose Mourinho designed one of his first sessions as Fenerbache coach.

Below is a YouTube breakdown detailing the session outline. If you enjoy this content, please subscribe to our MSC YouTube page.

Below are the exercises details shared in the breakdown:

Speed Agility Competition

  • This was an extension of the warm-up where players are now organized into two teams with a server positioned at the top in a 15x15 yard area.

  • Both teams go at the same time with the first player on each team passing the ball into the server, performing the speed work, and then receiving a return pass as they arrive at the top.

  • After receiving the return pass, the players now look to score immediately into their designated mini-goal.

  • T

he player to score first is awarded one point for their team and then the next two players go.

  • The game continues until a winner is declared.

Tactical 5v5 Exercise

  • This exercise takes place inside a 30x30 yard area outside the box

  • Defensive team organized into a back four and one holder

  • Attacking team organized into a midfield four and one center forward

  • Ball is served into the attacking team who are simply looking to create a goal-scoring opportunity, either by a shot at the edge of the box or from a cross

  • If the defensive team win possession, they are looking to score in the min-goals and the attacking team are encouraged to counter-press aggressively

  • The defensive team can use the goalkeeper as a ‘plus one’ in transition moments

High Intensity 3v3 Game

  • This exercise takes place in a 20x20 yard area, with two mini-goals on one end and two gates on the other end

  • The coach serves to the possession team initially, who are looking to complete five passes before scoring in the mini-goals

  • If the defensive team win possession, they are looking to score by dribbling through the gates at the top

  • If they do score by dribbling through the gates, the roles now change and the defenders keep possession and look to score into the higher goals
