Another week of practical training ground content at Modern Soccer Coach, featuring three excellent coaching ideas from different levels of the game. This week, we're looking at how to improve your back four, a finishing exercise inspired by Mikel Arteta at Arsenal, and a tactical passing warm-up from Diego Simeone's Atlético Madrid. Three different topics, but plenty of ideas and coaching detail to take into your own sessions.

Improving Your Back Four – Lessons from AC Milan

What can we learn from one of the greatest defensive units in football history? This video explores key principles of back four defending, drawing inspiration from the legendary AC Milan teams. From maintaining distances and moving together as a unit to recognizing when to press, cover and drop, we look at how coaches can improve collective defensive organization without losing individual aggression. Some excellent ideas for coaches working on defensive structure and decision-making.

Mikel Arteta – Arsenal Finishing Exercise

A finishing exercise from Arsenal that combines movement, passing and attacking the goal with purpose. Rather than simply lining players up for repetitive shooting, the exercise challenges players to coordinate their runs, recognize spaces and execute their final actions at speed. A great example of how coaches can bring more realism and tactical detail into finishing practices while maintaining a high number of repetitions.

Atlético Madrid – Tactical Passing Warm-Up

A fascinating look at a tactical passing warm-up from Diego Simeone's Atlético Madrid. The exercise combines technical execution with movement, positioning and timing, giving players opportunities to rehearse important attacking connections before the main session begins. It also raises an interesting question for coaches: how can we make our passing warm-ups more relevant to the tactical demands of the game without overcomplicating them?
