Coaching Your Back Four With Detail

1 min read

Coaching a back four is often focused on three key movements: stepping, squeezing, and shifting. But modern attacking movements are creating challenges that go far beyond simply moving together as a defensive unit. From forwards dropping into midfield to wide players and attacking midfielders making runs in behind, defenders are constantly being forced to make difficult decisions around positioning, tracking runners, and protecting central spaces.

In this Modern Soccer Coach tactical breakdown, we look at two common attacking movements that can expose a back four and explore how coaches can better prepare their players to deal with them. We also challenge traditional back four training methods and explain why larger spaces, attacking overloads, and realistic game situations can help players develop a better understanding of when to step, when to hold, and how to defend collectively.
