John Wall: Bielsa and Rotations

Updated: Oct 24, 2020

We were joined yesterday on the webinar by John Wall, a coach and analyst born in Sweden and CEO of GameInsight Soccer. He presented on areas around the book that he co-wrote with Hans Backe and was inspired by Marcelo Bielsa called 'Rotations and Interchanges'. I loved the book personally, not just because of the fascination with Bielsa, but also how John challenges coaches to learn from Bielsa, but not copy him. For him, the importance of creativity for coaches, allowing players time and space to solve their own problems, and creating a style of play that can inspire people to enjoy the game, are so important. There is a great deal of complexity with the style of play that Bielsa adapts, especially when it comes to rotations, and I think this webinar is a fascinating insight into the detail of the movements, some ideas with the training, but also how flexible and agile a coach must be with their philosophy to adopt them with their team, while at the same time appreciating that the time and repetition required take enormous levels of commitment. Alongside this webinar, I would highly recommend coaches get a copy of the book where John details and reviews these processes even more.
