Even after Saturday's scintillating performance in the Champions League final, Luis Enrique has always been a firm favorite in the coaching community. His teams play with a certain style and manner in each phase of the game and somehow he has mastered the balance of freedom and structure at the highest level. There is no better time to look at the Spanish coach's training methods at PSG and see what we can learn. This week on the MSC Breakdown, we share three different types of exercises from the newly crowned European champions and see what is unique about their training. If you enjoy the exercises, you can find more resources on the Modern Soccer Coach Shop, as well as checking out our NEW MSC Community Platform where you can access every MSC webinar and tons of exclusive content. Below are the details and dimensions of each exercise.
Warm-Up Activation
Players are in groups of five inside a 10x25 yard area with a mini-goal
Multiple groups are set-up to create a 'relay race'
Two players start alongside one another on mannequins and receive a pass from a central player
Players combine to bypass the mannequin and the player who is released must dribble into the 'End Zone' and finish in the mini-goal
After finishing in mini-goal, player must sprint to wide pole
Players rotate and exercise also has variations with the passing combinations
Defending in Transition Exercise
Players are organized positionally with a back three in possession and a holding midfielder ahead
Defensive team start with three players inside a 15x30 yard area, a forward ahead, plus a waiting player on the outside
Exercise starts with the back three passing across the zone and the defensive team 'shadowing' across
On the coach's signal, the wide player drives into the zone and then passes into the mini-goal ahead
The coach then plays a pass to the awaiting player on the outside, who joins in the attack to goal
The player who passed into the mini-goal is out of the exercise and the build-up team now must defend in transition against a 5v3 overload
Functional Wide Play With Crossing/Finish
Three wide players are organized inside two 10x10 yard zones, with one defender in each
Forwards start on the mannequins at the edge of the box
Wide players must combine to progress against two 3v1 scenarios, using a variety of solutions to release a player into the wide channel
As soon as the wide player is released, forwards both criss-cross their runs and arrive in the box to finish from a cross
