Coaching Rotations: The Bielsa Way

Finding time and space in key attacking areas is the name of the game for a team when they begin their attack from deep positions. This week's MSC Breakdown focuses on the different types of rotations that teams can utilize during their build-up and attack. Rotations are extremely beneficial for possession-based teams who are looking at unbalancing a defensive 'block' and potentially create a situation where they can find a player in an advanced position with time and space. Using John Wall's exceptional book, Rotations and Interchanges, where he studies the tactical concepts of Marcelo Bielsa, we look at the different types of rotations than can take place.

Below are the three different types of rotations that John breaks down in his book.

Horizontal Rotations

This is where space is created above in different lines which then creates an opportunity for a teammate to receive in space, directly above the passer.

Vertical Rotations

This is where space is created above the ball to bypass an opponent and allows you to pass to the "closest player positioned for a better entry." In other words, a more progressive passing option towards goal.

Combination of Vertical and Horizontal Rotations

This is where vertical and horizontal rotations are combined in the same phase of play, opening up space directly in front of the passer and then beyond with potential runners.
