Pressing is often talked about as an intensity problem. Can we get there quicker? Can we be more aggressive? Can we win the ball back higher? But through my work in tactical analysis, I keep seeing the same thing: effective pressing is much more than running and effort. The real challenge is coordinating the actions around the player applying pressure — controlling space, protecting against the next pass and recognizing when the opposition can be forced into a predictable decision.

In this video, I use examples from my tactical analysis work to highlight three pressing details that coaches can immediately take onto the training field. We look at pressing as a collective action, the importance of the players behind the first line of pressure, and why the best pressing teams don't simply chase the ball — they work together to manipulate where the opposition can play next.
