FREE Full Session: Defensive Transition

Counterpressing is often discussed as a defensive transition principle, but training it effectively requires more than simply asking players to react quickly when possession is lost. The behaviors you want on transition should come directly from your game model: where you want to regain the ball, which players are responsible for applying immediate pressure, how teammates react around the ball, and what happens if that first press is broken. Those details should then influence the spaces, numbers and challenges you create throughout the session.
In this MSC Breakdown, Gary takes you through a full high-tempo defensive transition session built around the principle of winning the ball back immediately. The session progresses through three connected components — a high-tempo warm-up, a small-sided principles game and a larger tactical game. Rather than treating them as three separate exercises, each practice is designed to reinforce the same ideas while gradually increasing the space, complexity and tactical demands placed on the players.
