Rafal Ulatowski - Player Development at Lech Poznan

Updated: Oct 24, 2020

On Saturday we were joined by Lech Poznan Head of Academy Coaching, Rafał Ulatowski, who discussed their model of player development and how the football culture in Poland works at the professional level. This was an extremely detailed presentation and a fascinating insight into how a club not only develops player from a technical and tactical viewpoint, but also how they develop players to thrive in the high-stakes game of professional football. I loved how the identity of the club is so connected to how they shape their environment. Thanks to Carol Dweck, "Grit" is what a lot of us coaches want to instill in our players, but Lech Poznan's philosophy of playing youth teams up one age group at all times and then the reserve team playing in the third team of the professional league, exposed to the reality of relegation, surely aids their ability to teach and facilitate it. This is a presentation I will be watching again and again for sure!
